Targeted Support in Mathematics
Bespoke support so every school can benefit fully from the wider Maths Hubs offer of professional development.

Targeted Support in Maths
Targeted Support in Maths supports primary and secondary schools to make sustained change in maths through a bespoke offer over a sustained number of agreed days.
Venn Essex Maths Hub works with participating leaders to develop their understanding and practice of developing maths, underpinned by the key features of the EEF implementation cycle. Leaders will meet regularly with their LLME over a planned period of time and will collaboratively explore, plan, deliver and evaluate a development focus in maths.
The collaborative professionalism between the school leader(s) and the LLME aims to develop a long-term professional learning relationship between the school and Maths Hub.
Local leaders of maths education (LLMEs) from Venn Essex Maths Hub work with school leaders to:
- confidently assess and review the culture, systems and practices supporting maths in their school
- foster an implementation climate that supports improvements to teaching and learning in maths
- develop a sustained relationship with our Venn Essex Maths Hub Team.

Intensive Support
Intensive support is designed to build leadership capacity within a school to foster a change in culture in the teaching and learning of maths. This is achieved through the Intensive Support Partner (ISP) and school leaders working in partnership to engage with a robust implementation process (based on the EEF’s A School’s Guide to Implementation report) on an agreed initiative to improve mathematics teaching and learning in the school. The focus is on providing sustained support over time, for the leadership in both the school and subject to:
• clarify priorities for development
• plan short/medium/long-term development
• ensure effective sustained support from the Maths Hub especially for establishing teaching for mastery.
Maths Hubs are able to offer support through a certain number of ISP days per school in order to work in partnership with them to bring about sustained change. In addition, there can be a school grant of leader/teacher release time, where needed. Both the ISP days and school grant for each school can vary based on a judgement of relative need. The Intensive support is targeted at schools identified through a formal process based on agreed criteria/context. The support can start and finish at any point in the year.
Enhanced Support
Enhanced Support Enhanced support is targeted at schools identified by Maths Hubs as needing the extra support in order for the existing Maths Hub offer they are engaged with to have greater impact. These schools are highlighted as not being able to meet the intended outcomes without support. Maths Hubs are able to offer support through a certain number of LLME days per school. The amount for each school can vary, based on a judgement of relative need. This support can start and finish at any point in the year. Although the support is bespoke the LLME will work with the subject leadership and school leadership to support the school in reaching the outcomes of the Maths Hub offer that they are currently engaged with.
Schools might benefit with additional support for several reasons, for example:
- to support a subject leader new to the role
- guidance to develop fluency or use manipulatives
- help to embed Mastering Number at KS1 and Early Years with staff new to the role.
